Archive for February, 2013

Yesterday, the IPM Advisory Committee of the IPM Council of Canada met to finalize changes to the Ontario Golf IPM Accreditation program for 2013. These changes, which include a change to the IPM scouting year, will be announced by Teri Yamada, Executive Director of the IPM Council of Canada on Thurs. Feb. 21, 2013 at OTS. This is an excellent opportunity for Certified IPM Agents to become aware of these changes before the beginning of the season. Join us at OTS to attend this very important session. Registrations are still open and walk-ins the day of the symposium are also welcome. For more information go to http://www.turfsymposium.ca.

Forty-six people have. They are enrolled in the 44th Annual Turf Managers’ Short Course which is a professional development program offered through the University of Guelph, Centre for Open Learning and Educational Support during the month of February. It is a four week intensive course held at the Guelph Turfgrass Institute for people who are new to the turfgrass industry as well as seasoned veterans who would like a refresher. The instructors are a combination of University faculty and turf industry professionals. Students are employed at municipalities, golf courses, lawn care companies and turf supply companies. Some are owners and some are employees. Their ages range from just out of high school, recent university graduates to those who are mid-career and are looking for a career change. These students are drawn from a wide geographic area. The bulk of them are from Southwestern Ontario, but there are students from Northern Ontario (St. Joseph’s Island, Hearst and Red Lake), Manitoba, Alberta, British Columbia and one student is from south of the border (New Jersey).

They arrive as 46 individuals, not knowing each other and already, just over a week in you can tell that the in class learning has been tremendous, but almost as important is the networking. At the breaks, they now share their experiences from their workplaces with their classmates adding to the learning that takes place in class. If you haven’t attended and you are interested, it is an excellent opportunity to hone your turf management skills.
